The box eats anything that lies down
A broom on the floor disappears the moment a bag tips over it. A magnet on a handle looks like scrap. A dolly lying flat looks like a frame you meant to throw away. The compactor will not sort your tools back out, and the attendant is not watching for them. As soon as a tool is done, carry it to the cab. Do not set it on the bumper, where it falls off in the lane. Do not lean it in the front corner and promise yourself you will remember. You will remember after the door is shut and the truck is on the scale road. Label your own broom with a strip of tape so it does not look like the site's broom or the rental company's. Theirs stays with them. Yours goes home in the cab.
Rented tools and your tools are both easy to lose
The appliance dolly and the pads you rented are not cleaned up by a good sweep. They have to be present at the return, and the contract is what describes a missing piece. Do not guess a replacement price. Your own shop vac, gloves, and flashlight are easier to replace and still painful to leave in a dark nose. Make a short list before you leave home and read it again before you close the door at the site. Two people help: one sweeps, one ferries tools to the cab so they never sit in the sweep path. If a tool does go into the bay by mistake, tell staff immediately. Do not climb the working pile to retrieve it if the site forbids walking the floor.
Check the cab so the tool is not in the trash later
A cab full of bottles is not a clean return, and a cab with a broom across the pedals is not a safe drive. Stand the broom where it cannot jam the pedals, coil the cord of a vac, and put screws you pulled with a magnet into a container, not loose in the cup holder. That container of fasteners goes to the scrap or trash pile the attendant named, unless you are keeping them. It does not stay in the truck as a rattling surprise. At the rental lot, look in the box one more time with the light on. The last place a tool hides is the front corner, under a flap of cardboard you meant to throw away. Throw the cardboard in a disposal bay, not in the rental lot, and take the tool with you.
Before you go
- Move each tool to the cab the moment you finish using it.
- Label your broom so it is not mistaken for site equipment.
- Read a short tool list before you close the door.
- Look in the front corners with a light before you leave the stall.

Questions people ask
I already threw the broom in the bay. Can I go get it?
Tell the attendant before you step onto the pile. Many sites do not allow people to walk the working face. If they say the broom stays, it stays. Do not climb after it. Next time the broom goes to the cab before the last bags.
Should I leave my magnet for the next renter?
No. Your tools go home with you. A magnet left in the track can jam the door, and a magnet left on the floor looks like debris. Rental equipment goes back to its storage spot. Everything else leaves in your cab.
