Sweep Glass Before You Kneel

Do not kneel in the front corners of a rental until you have swept. Box the broken glass and put it in the trash at the disposal site, not in a recycling bin of clean cardboard.

Knees find what eyes miss

The front corners of a box are where you kneel to reach a last strap or a bag. They are also where glass settles. Broken glass cleanup rental truck work starts with a broom and a dustpan, not with your knee on the deck. Sweep the whole floor, then the corners, before you kneel or put a hand down. Wear gloves. Box the shards or tape them so they cannot slice the bag. Thick cardboard you already have is fine if you close it and tape it. Put that package in the trash at the disposal site. Do not drop it in a recycling bin of clean cardboard. A mirror frame and a window are not paper fiber once they are broken.

Where glass hides after the first pass

Shards drop into the e-track, the door threshold, and the gap beside a wheel well in a van. A second sweep after you pull the ramp in will catch pieces the ramp dragged back. Use a flashlight at a low angle so the glint shows. A damp paper towel you throw away can pick up dust-sized bits after the large pieces are boxed. That towel goes in the trash bag, not into a pocket you forget. Do not vacuum glass in a way that throws it back out of a cheap vacuum. Do not blow it out the door onto the pavement. Ordinary dry sweepings, including glass, go to the disposal site.

Tell the site if the load is more than a picture frame

A single broken mirror from a household cleanout is a trash question for that site. A pile of window glass from a remodel may be a different row on their rules. Ask before you mix it with bags of household trash. Call the site about rental trucks too. A map pin is not permission. If someone is cut, deal with the injury first and do not treat this as medical advice. For the truck, the goal is no loose shards in the floor cracks, because the next driver kneels there. Photograph the swept floor if you want a record. If you see sparkle in the photo, sweep again. Box the new bits with the rest of the glass.

Before you go

  1. Sweep the floor and corners before you kneel or reach down.
  2. Box or tape the glass and put it in the trash at the site.
  3. Check the tracks, the threshold, and the ramp a second time.
  4. Do not put broken glass in a bin of clean cardboard.

Kneeling in the front corner, or tossing shards into the cardboard recycling.

Questions people ask

Can I recycle window glass with bottles?

Do not assume a bottle bin takes window or mirror glass. Those streams differ, and a disposal site may want the broken pane in the trash. Ask that site. Box it so it does not cut the attendant or the bag. A recycling bin of clean cardboard is the wrong place.

What if glass is in the cab too?

Sweep the cab floor and shake the mats into the trash bag at the disposal site. Look before you rest a hand on the seat rail. Do not brush shards out the door onto the rental lot. If a pane exploded and dust is everywhere, take the time to box it. Leaving sparkle for the next renter is a dirty return.
