Anchors, not hope
Bulky furniture is light for its size and tips easily. A sofa standing on end, a cabinet with drawers, or a table with legs in the air needs at least two straps to solid anchor points in the bed or trailer. The anchor should be a rated tie-down, not a plastic taillight housing and not the top of a flimsy rail. Run the strap over the piece and back to a second anchor, or use two straps in a crossing pattern so the piece cannot walk sideways. Drawers come out. Tape them or remove them. Doors on cabinets get taped shut.
Tension without crushing
Ratchet the strap until the furniture cannot rock when you push it with a hand. Then stop. Over-tightening bends a cabinet frame and can pull a cheap anchor out of the sheet metal. A pad under the strap, such as a folded towel, keeps the webbing from cutting a corner. Rope can work if you know a knot that will not slip, but a ratchet is easier to re-tension after the load settles. Check the strap after the first few blocks. If it went slack, the piece moved. Stop and reset it before the highway.
Think about the unload
A strap that is trapped under the next item will keep you in the bay longer. Put furniture where you can release it without crawling under a pile of bags. At the site, unstrap only when the vehicle is parked in the unloading spot. A sofa that shifts when the strap comes off can fall out of the bed onto the person standing below. Stand to the side. If the piece is too heavy to control, ask for a spotter's advice and get a second adult. Do not let a child steady a falling couch.
Before you go
- Strap furniture to rated anchors with at least two straps.
- Tape doors and drawers so they cannot slide open.
- Recheck tension after the first few blocks.
- Release the straps only when parked, standing clear of the drop.

Questions people ask
Is a bungee cord enough for a dresser?
No. Bungees stretch. Use a ratchet strap or a rope tied so it cannot slip.
Should furniture lie flat or stand up?
Whichever way it cannot tip, and whichever way the site can unload. A tall piece standing above the rails needs a lower position or a different vehicle.
