Standing a Softener Tank for the Haul

A drained softener tank still tips if it rides on its side unblocked. Stand it upright, strap it, and keep the valve from knocking a hole in the cab.

Upright and strapped to a real anchor

A resin tank is a tall cylinder with the weight, even when drained, happy to roll. Stand it upright against a side of the bed you can strap to, not loose in the middle. Run a strap around the upper third to a rated anchor and another lower down if you have the point, so the tank cannot pivot over one strap. The control valve is the tall, brittle part. Point it where a shift hits the strap and not the cab glass. Pad the valve. A brine tank is a shorter, lighter drum. Set it beside the resin tank, empty, and strap it too, or it will slide under the resin tank and kick the bottom out. Plumbing you already capped at the house should not be leaking into this picture. If water is still streaming from the valve, the tank is not ready to ride.

Beads and salt are not ballast

Do not leave a loose pile of resin beads or salt in the bed to keep the tank from sliding. Beads roll like ball bearings, and salt brine is a mess you will track into the scale house. If beads must travel, they travel in a closed bag, wedged so the bag cannot slide under the tank. The tank itself is secured by straps and by standing on a swept floor. A dolly under the tank is a skate unless it is strapped and the wheels are chocked. Take the tank off the dolly. Lay a rubber mat if the bed is a slick liner. The mat is a helper. The strap is the control. Keep the tank below the bed sides. A tank standing above the rails has a high tip-over point and a valve in the wind.

Two people at the bay

A tank that rode upright should come out upright. One person steadies the valve while the other releases the upper strap. If you release both straps and then grab the tank, it will pick its own direction. Walk it down a ramp or lift it with two people. Do not lay it over the tailgate and let it drop onto the valve. The valve is how the tank stays a tank instead of a leaking cylinder. Set the brine tank down separately. Check the bed for salt. Sweep it into a bag. Salt left in the bed becomes rust and a white trail on the next load of cardboard.

Before you go

  1. Stand the drained resin tank upright and strap it in two places to rated anchors.
  2. Pad the valve and point it away from the cab glass.
  3. Strap the empty brine tank beside it, and bag any loose resin or salt.
  4. Release the upper strap only while a second person steadies the tank.

Laying an unstrapped resin tank on its side so it can roll into the tailgate.

Questions people ask

Can the tank lie down if the truck cap is short?

Only if it is fully drained, blocked like a log, and strapped so it cannot roll. The valve still needs a pad, and upright is steadier when the height allows.

Should I remove the valve for the ride?

Leave it on unless the receiving yard told you to remove it. A half-disconnected valve leaks and catches on straps.
