The broom leaves a line the vac can finish
A broom is fast and it misses the seam. Drywall dust and sand sit in the crack where the wall panel meets the plywood, and in the front corners a broom head will not square up. A shop vac with a brush nozzle pulls that line out. Run it after the big sweep, not instead of the sweep, or you will fill the cup with pieces that belonged in a bag. Empty the cup and the hose into the disposal bay before you leave the stall. Do not empty it into the rental lot, a storm drain, or a trash can at a gas station on the way back. If the cup smells like food, empty it at the site and wipe the rim. A sour vac in a closed cab fails the drive home even when the box is clean.
Do not vacuum what should not be airborne
Ordinary household dirt is a broom and vac job. If you think the dust is asbestos, lead-paint chips, or a chemical powder, stop. Do not vacuum it, do not shake the filter out in the lot, and do not start a removal project in the truck. Use the local hazardous-waste or licensed-abatement path. This is not a do-it-yourself cleanup for those materials. The same stop applies to wet paint, oil, gasoline, and solvents. A vac spreads them and then the vac itself is contaminated. Blot, bag rags as the program tells you, and tell the rental counter. Do not rinse the vac filter into the street to 'save' it. If ordinary dry grit is all you have, empty it at the bay and tap the hose there too.
Power, cord, and the dark nose
Know whether the vac runs on a battery you charged or whether you were planning on power the stall does not have. Test it at home. A dead vac is a broom-only cleanup, which is why the broom still comes. Coil the cord before it can catch the ramp or a tire. When you vac the nose, use the truck's box light or a flashlight so you see the seam. Photograph the corners after the cup is empty. Then put the vac in the cab, not back in the box. At the return, the inspector should not find a dusty hose in the cargo area. If the filter is caked with ordinary dust, tap it into a bag at the disposal site. If you are unsure the dust is ordinary, leave the filter alone and ask before you blow it clean.
Before you go
- Sweep first, then vacuum the wall seams and both front corners.
- Empty the cup and hose into the disposal bay before you leave.
- Stop if the dust might be hazardous. Do not vacuum it or shake it out.
- Put the vac in the cab, not back in the cargo box.

Questions people ask
Can I use the household vacuum from the hallway closet?
You can, if you empty it at the disposal site and you are only picking up ordinary dry grit. A household machine clogs fast on drywall dust. Do not use it on wet paint, oil, or unknown powder. Empty it before the return so the rental cab is not hauling a full bag of dirt.
The vac blew a cloud when I turned it on. Is that a problem?
If the cloud is ordinary dust you already swept, let it settle and vacuum it again, then empty at the bay. If you think the cloud could be asbestos, lead paint, or a chemical, stop, leave the area ventilated, and do not shake the filter out. Ask the hazardous-waste or licensed-abatement path what to do next.
