The line set is not a plumbing scrap
A ductless mini-split holds refrigerant in the outdoor unit, the indoor head, and the copper line set between them. Have a certified technician pump down or recover the charge and disconnect the system. Do not cut the lines with a tubing cutter, do not unsweat them while they are charged, and do not vent the gas so the copper is easier to coil. Leave the line set intact until that technician says recovery is complete and tells you how the pieces may be separated. Electrical disconnect is part of the same professional visit, not a step to improvise at the breaker with the lines still charged. The wall bracket and the line-hide cover are ordinary plastic or metal only after the equipment is safe. Ask the technician what you may haul yourself.
Two cabinets, one system
After recovery, you may have an outdoor condenser, an indoor head, and a coil of copper. Call the scrap yard and the disposal site and describe all three. Some yards want the copper and refuse the cabinets because of the electronics and the oil residue. Some appliance programs want the outdoor unit whole. Say recovery is done, and say who did it if the site asks. Do not claim recovery you did not have performed. Residual oil in a compressor is a reason to keep the unit upright and to ask before you tip it. The indoor head may contain electronics that belong in an e-waste stream if the yard refuses them. Ask. The condensate drain is a plastic tube. Empty it in a sink. It is not a refrigerant line, but it is still a drip you do not want in the truck.
Move only what you were cleared to move
Strap the outdoor unit upright unless the technician cleared another position. It is dense and it will crush a tailgate if you slide it alone. Use two people and a dolly rated for the weight. Cap or plug openings the technician left, the way they instructed, so oil does not seep into the bed. At the site, use the refrigerant-appliance or scrap bay you were assigned. If staff see an open line that was cut and pinched with pliers, they can refuse the load. Take it to a certified technician. Do not abandon either cabinet at the gate. A mini-split left for scavengers is how lines get cut in a parking lot.
Before you go
- Have a certified technician recover the refrigerant and disconnect the line set.
- Do not cut, vent, or unsweat charged lines yourself.
- Ask the yard or appliance program where the outdoor unit, indoor head, and copper go after recovery.
- Strap the outdoor unit upright and unload it only in the bay you were given.

Questions people ask
Is a line-hide plastic cover recyclable?
It is a plastic trim piece. After the technician has disconnected the equipment, ask whether that cover is trash or construction debris. It is not the refrigerant system.
Can the copper be sold as ordinary plumbing copper?
Only after certified recovery and only if the yard accepts line-set copper with the fittings still on. Ask the yard before you coil it into a clean-copper bin.
Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
