Retiring a Bicycle

A worn bicycle may be reusable, scrap metal, or bulky trash. An e-bike battery is none of those: tape the terminals and use a battery program.

Decide whether it is still a bike

A bicycle with sound wheels, working brakes, and a frame that is not cracked can be a donation if a shop or a charity will take it. Call first. A bent frame, a seized drivetrain, or a bike that has lived in the weather is usually scrap or bulky waste. Do not leave it unlocked at the curb overnight. Ask the disposal site whether bicycles are accepted as bulky metal or as trash, and ask a scrap yard whether they want the whole bike or only the frame with the tires removed. Tires and tubes may have their own rule, similar to other small rubber, so ask rather than hiding them inside a metal load. Take the lock off. A U-lock left on the frame is a problem for the shear at a yard.

E-bike batteries are a hard stop

If the bicycle has a removable lithium battery, take it off before the frame goes anywhere. Do not puncture it, do not crush it under other debris, and do not put it in the household trash or the recycling cart. Tape the terminals and take the pack to a battery recycling program that accepts e-bike or power-tool packs. If the pack is swollen, damaged, or was in a fire, say that when you hand it over and follow the program's instructions. Do not toss a damaged pack in the truck bed under the frame. The motor and the controller may stay on the bike if the yard or the site accepts them, but the battery does not ride along as an afterthought. Pedal bikes with a tiny button-cell in a computer should lose that cell to a taped battery program as well.

Keep the pedals from chewing the bed

Turn the pedals inward or remove them and bag them. A spinning crank will gouge the bed wall and the next piece of cargo. Strap the frame so it cannot rotate. Handlebars catch wind and catch door edges, so turn them parallel to the frame if you can. At the scrap yard, unload where they point. At a transfer station, use the bulky bay. Do not drop the bike from the tailgate onto its derailleur and walk away. If a tire comes off, pick it up. A refused e-bike battery still in your cab should go to the battery program the same day, not into a gas-station trash can.

Before you go

  1. Donate a safe, working bike only after the recipient agrees to take it.
  2. Remove any lithium pack, tape the terminals, and use a battery program.
  3. Ask a scrap yard or the disposal site whether the frame and tires are accepted.
  4. Strap the bike so the pedals and bars cannot swing, and unload it where directed.

Questions people ask

Can kids' bikes go in the same load?

Yes, if the site or yard accepts bicycles. A small bike is still metal, plastic, and rubber, so do not put it in a household recycling cart.

What if the battery will not release from the frame?

Leave it in place and tell the battery program or the site before you go. Do not pry a swollen pack with a screwdriver.
