Know when to stop pulling
Modern sheet vinyl from a recent install is usually a plastic flooring product that goes with construction debris. Older sheet goods and the black adhesive under them can be a different problem. If the floor is old enough that you suspect asbestos in the sheet or the mastic, stop breaking it up. Do not sand, scrape, or grind it. Hire a licensed abatement contractor. This is not a do-it-yourself removal. For a clearly modern floor you are already replacing, cut it into strips you can roll, and keep the backing together so crumbs do not spread through the house.
Underlayment is a second load
Plywood or particle underlayment, staples, and felt paper are not the same item as the vinyl sheet. Ask the site whether they can travel together as mixed construction debris or whether wood must be separated. Bag staples and tack strips. Do not call the load yard waste. Vinyl does not compost, and it fouls a chipper. If the sheet is wet from a plumbing leak, say so. Water weight adds up, and moldy underlayment may still be accepted as debris but should not be donated or reused indoors.
Roll, tape, and declare it
Roll the sheet tightly and tape it. Loose vinyl acts like a sail in an open truck. Put crumbs in a bag. At the scale house, say vinyl sheet flooring from a remodel. Staff may send you to construction debris rather than household trash. Follow that direction. If they refuse the load because of the age of the material or because you cannot say what the adhesive is, take it back. Do not dump it on a clean-wood pile to get rid of it.
Before you go
- Stop and hire a licensed abatement contractor if you suspect asbestos.
- For modern sheet, roll and tape it and bag the loose crumbs.
- Ask whether underlayment can ride with the vinyl.
- Declare flooring at the scale and use the construction bay.

Questions people ask
Is luxury vinyl plank the same as sheet vinyl?
It is still plastic flooring. Bag or bundle planks so they cannot scatter, and ask the site which bay takes them. Do not put them in recycling unless the program lists that product.
Can I leave the felt paper stuck to the subfloor?
If you are disposing of the subfloor too, ask about mixed wood and felt. If the subfloor stays, scrape only when you know the adhesive is not a suspect material.
