Who can use them and how much
The City says City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County residents can drop off household hazardous waste free. The disposal limit is up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds per visit, and staff will ask for the address where the waste came from. Eligible businesses need an appointment.
What's accepted
Aerosol cans, automotive fluids (gas and diesel containers aren't returned), cleaners, fluorescent bulbs and mercury items, paint, stains and solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane cylinders, batteries, and e-waste such as TVs, computers, phones and printers. Not accepted: explosives, radioactive materials and medical waste. For sharps, LA points residents to kiosks and California's free mail-back program.
Wipe personal data from devices first, and tape battery terminals. Related: printers, batteries, aerosol cans.
How drop-off works
Pack items in the trunk or cargo area with lids tight and containers upright. Put anything leaky inside a larger bucket. At the center you stay in your vehicle, don't smoke, and turn the engine off in the unloading area. Staff unload for you. Big electronics can also go out through free bulky item pickup booked on MyLA311 or at 1-800-773-2489.
S.A.F.E. Centers don't take trash or bulky junk. For a landfill or transfer station, use the Dumpmapper map, and estimate the gate fee with the dump fee calculator.
