How to Find RV Dump Stations Near You on Dumpmapper

Dumpmapper's new RV layer maps 3,138 RV dump stations and 525 fresh water fill points. Here is how to switch it on and search by ZIP.

Dumpmapper started as a map of landfills, transfer stations and recycling drop-offs. Today it gets a layer built for RV owners: a switch that hides everything else and shows only RV dump stations and RV fresh water fill points. At launch the layer holds 3,138 dump stations and 525 separate water fill points in all 50 states, and 226 of the listings are tagged as free.

This post explains how to use it, where the data comes from, and what the map can't tell you yet.

Turn on the RV layer

There are three ways in:

  1. On the home map, tap the RV dump & water button under the search box. The map switches to RV listings only.
  2. Open Filters, switch on RV dump & water, then press None on the other types if you only want RV sites.
  3. Use a direct link: the RV dump & water layer opens the map with only RV listings showing. You can bookmark it.

The RV layer is off by default so people looking for a landfill don't get a map full of campground dump stations. Its data loads only when you switch it on, so the regular map stays fast.

Search by ZIP, city or Near me

With the layer on, type a ZIP code or city and press Search, or tap Near me. The map moves to that spot and the side panel (a sheet at the bottom on phones) lists the closest RV sites with their distance in miles. If nothing is close, the map zooms out a few steps until it finds the nearest matches and tells you it did.

Each pin opens a popup with the type, nearest town, any listed fee or hours, and links for directions and the full listing page. Orange RV pins are dump stations and blue drop pins are fresh water fill points.

What each listing page shows

Every RV site has its own page with the details our sources list: services (for example, whether potable water is available at the dump), fee notes, access notes such as customers only, hours when they're published, the county, and a small map with the nearest other RV sites. Each page links to the source record so you can see where the information came from.

Many dump stations in OpenStreetMap have no name, because they sit inside a gas station, campground or rest area. We label those by type and location, for example "RV Dump Station, Holland", and say so on the page.

Where the data comes from

The layer combines two public sources:

  • OpenStreetMap: everything tagged as a sanitary dump station, plus water points and drinking water taps tagged for motorhomes or caravans. Contributors map these at rest areas, parks, travel centers and campgrounds.
  • Recreation.gov (RIDB): federal campgrounds and recreation sites whose official description says they have a dump station. When the same station was already in OpenStreetMap, we kept one listing and noted the second source.

We don't copy listings from commercial RV apps or directories. You can browse the totals on the RV dump stations by state page.

What the map can't tell you yet

Open data is uneven. Some states are well mapped and others have only a few listings, so a blank area doesn't mean there's no dump station there. Fees are missing for most listings, and seasonal closures are rarely tagged. Campground dump stations listed from Recreation.gov may be for registered campers only or may charge a day-use fee.

Before you drive out of your way, call the site or check its own website. If a listing is wrong or closed, the correction form on every page helps us fix it.

Common questions

Is the RV layer free to use?

Yes. The map, the RV layer and every listing page are free, with no account needed.

Does the RV layer cover Canada?

Not yet. At launch the RV layer covers the United States. Canadian landfills and waste depots are on the main map.

Why don't I see RV sites when I open the map?

The RV layer is off by default. Tap the RV dump & water button or switch it on in Filters.

How do I report a closed dump station?

Open the listing and use Suggest a correction. Tell us what changed and, if you can, where you saw it.
