Do Not Block the Plates or the Lights

Straps, a ramp, or a hanging mattress cannot cover the license plate or the lamps. Fix that before you leave the driveway, and check again after you unload, before the ride back to the rental lot.

The plate and the lamps stay visible

Debris covering license plate area is a driving problem you can see from the bumper. A strap across the plate, a ramp that did not seat, a mattress corner, or a tarp tail can hide the plate or a brake light. Walk behind the truck before you leave the driveway. Read the plate from a few steps back. Look at both tail lamps and the plate light. If anything covers them, move the load or the strap. Tie to the truck's points, not across the lens. The same check belongs at the disposal site after you stow the ramp. Unloading changes what hangs off the back. A clean floor does not prove the rear is legal to drive.

Open beds and closed boxes both fail this

A box truck can still have a door strap or a ramp latch hanging over the plate. A pickup can have a branch or a net cord. A trailer can have a gate that drops in front of the lights. Check the vehicle you are actually driving, including a trailer plate if there is one. Do not pile one more bag that tips over the tailgate. If the load will not fit without covering the lights, it does not fit. Make a second trip. Do not cut a hole in the door to relocate a plate. If a lamp is broken because something hit it, tell the counter. Hiding a dark light with tape is not a repair.

After the dump, look again

People check on the way out of the house and forget the way out of the site. A ramp left an inch down, a shovel handle, or a wire from the metal pile can sit on the bumper. Gloves on, edges sharp. Put loose debris in the bag for the disposal site before you exit. Listen for a scrape that means the ramp is still down. Stop and stow it before the street. Call the disposal site about rental trucks before this careful loading, so you are not doing the plate check in a panic at a gate that will not take you. Dumpmapper can show candidate sites. A map pin is not permission. Visible plates do not grant entry.

Before you go

  1. Walk behind the truck and read the plate before you leave home.
  2. Move any strap, tarp, mattress, or branch off the plate and the lamps.
  3. If the load cannot ride without covering them, make a second trip.
  4. Check the rear again after you unload and stow the ramp.

Questions people ask

What if the rental plate is already hard to see?

Note that at pickup with a photo, then keep your load from making it worse. Do not add a bike rack, a ramp, or a bag that finishes the job of hiding it. If a lamp is out at pickup, point it out before you leave the rental lot so it is on the record. Your debris is still your job to move.

Can I tuck the plate up into the window?

Leave the plate where the truck has it mounted. Do not relocate it with tape on the glass or in the cab. Clear whatever you put in front of it. If the mount itself is bent, tell the counter instead of inventing a new spot. The check is visibility, not a craft project.
