Disposing of Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl plank is a plastic wear layer over a core, and it is not the same pile as sheet vinyl or clean wood. Confirm the bay before you fill the truck.

Name the product when you call

Vinyl plank, sometimes sold as luxury vinyl plank, is a plank-shaped floor with a plastic wear layer. It is not sheet vinyl, and it is not hardwood, even when the core is a wood-plastic mix or a rigid mineral board. Those cores behave differently under a loader, so tell the site you have vinyl plank from a room remodel and ask whether it is construction debris or household trash. A listing you found by ZIP code or city can be wrong about flooring, so confirm the day you plan to go. Do not describe the load as lumber. Staff who hear wood may send you to a pile that bans plastic wear layers. Keep the planks bundled so they do not fan out across the bed.

Glue-down scraps versus click planks

Click planks usually lift in long pieces you can stack. Glue-down plank often comes up in brittle shards stuck to mastic. Bag those shards. Do not grind old adhesive off the subfloor as a disposal step if you do not know what the adhesive is. Some older floor mastics are a stop-and-ask situation, and scattering dust through the house is the wrong way to prepare a haul. If the backing looks like it might be an older resilient floor rather than modern vinyl plank, pause and ask a qualified person before you break more of it up. Modern vinyl plank that you already lifted can be boxed. Loose grit stays in the box, not on the scale lane.

Keep it out of the wrong stream

Vinyl plank does not belong in curbside recycling, a brush pile, or a clean-fill area. Plastic wear layers and printed films are contamination in those streams. If a scrap yard takes the load, ask first, because a thin wear layer on a composite core is rarely a metal product. At the disposal site, unload where construction debris is assigned. If household trash is a different bay, do not hide planks under kitchen bags to avoid a question at the scale house. Say what you have. A mixed load can be billed as the stricter material or turned around. Sweep the bed so vinyl splinters are not left for the next stop.

Before you go

  1. Ask the site whether vinyl plank is taken as construction debris or trash.
  2. Stack click planks, and box brittle glue-down shards separately.
  3. Do not label the load as lumber or put it in recycling.
  4. Unload in the assigned bay and sweep loose splinters from the bed.

Questions people ask

Is vinyl plank the same disposal item as sheet vinyl?

No. Sheet vinyl comes up as a rolled sheet, and plank flooring comes up as boards or shards. Tell the site which one you actually have so they can direct you.

Can I leave the attached underlayment on?

If a thin pad is factory-attached, say so when you call. Loose extra underlayment should still be bundled apart so it is not treated as part of a wood load.
