Leave the glass in one piece if you can
A window sash is safer when the glass is still in the frame, taped corner to corner so a crack cannot open into a sheet of falling pieces. If the glass is already broken, glove up, set the shards in a rigid box, and label the box so the next handler knows it is glass. Do not put bare shards in a thin bag. Call the disposal site and ask whether residential windows are accepted, and whether insulated glass units have any extra rule. Some programs want the sash whole. Some want glass separate from the frame. Ask before you smash every lite in the driveway to save space. Smashing spreads chips you will then have to find with a broom.
Frames, weights, and old paint
Wood sashes, vinyl frames, and aluminum frames are different end points. Aluminum may be scrap if the glass is out and the yard agrees. Vinyl frames are usually construction trash. Wood sashes with ordinary paint can be bulky waste, but if the paint might be old lead paint, do not sand, scrape, or break the sash up to make it smaller. Bag loose chips that already exist, and hire licensed people for any real removal of lead-paint coatings. Sash weights hidden in the jamb are small, dense iron. Set them in a box so they do not become missiles in a braking truck. Insulated units can leak oily residue from the seal. Wipe that into a rag and bag the rag rather than smearing it through the bed.
Stand them only if they are blocked
Windows ride best on edge, blocked, and strapped, with a pad against the glass. A flat stack of many sashes can still crack if you set a heavy tool on the top lite. Keep the stack below the rails and flag any frame that overhangs. At the site, unload in the construction or bulky bay. Tell the attendant if a box contains loose glass. Do not lean rejected windows against the site fence. If double-pane units are refused, take them back and ask where insulated glass should go. Sweep the bed and your gloves. A single chip in the palm of a glove is how people get cut on the ride home.
Before you go
- Tape intact glass, and box shards that are already broken.
- Ask the site whether sashes are accepted whole and whether frames must be sorted.
- Do not sand or scrape sashes that might have lead paint.
- Strap the windows, unload them in the assigned bay, and sweep up chips.
Breaking every pane in the driveway and then carrying the shards in a grocery bag.
Questions people ask
Are storm windows the same as the main sash?
They are still glass in a frame. Keep them taped and ask the site if aluminum storms can go to scrap once the glass is removed.
Can I recycle the glass as bottles?
No. Window glass is a different formulation from bottle glass. Do not put it in a bottle bank. Follow the site's rule for sashes and shards.
