Use an approved container
Insulin needles, lancets, and other household sharps can stick the person who lifts the bag. Put them in an approved sharps container from a pharmacy or health provider, the kind made for this purpose, with a puncture-resistant wall and a lid that locks. Do not use a thin plastic grocery bag, a soda bottle you might later recycle by mistake, or a loose coffee can with a piece of tape. Do not clip needle tips. When the container is filled to the line the maker marked, close it. Do not pack it past the fill line and do not try to empty it and reuse it.
Find a community program
Pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and public health programs often run sharps collection. Call and ask what container they accept, whether there is a fee listed on their sheet, and whether they take the container from residents. A household transfer station's regular trash pit is the wrong default. Do not hide a bag of loose needles under household garbage. If a site has a specific sharps drop, they will say so when you call. Mail-back sharps services exist in some areas. Use one only if you have confirmed the instructions with that service.
Keep sharps away from everything else
Do not put a sharps container in the recycling bin. Do not set it beside a cardboard pile. Store it out of reach of children and pets until the drop-off. When you travel, stand the container upright in a box so the lid cannot pop. Tell the collection staff what you are handing them. If they refuse the brand of container, take it home and ask which container they want. Never leave sharps on a counter at an unattended recycling yard.
Before you go
- Put needles and lancets into an approved sharps container and close it at the fill line.
- Call a pharmacy, clinic, or community sharps program.
- Do not place loose sharps in trash, recycling, or a dump load.
- Hand over the closed container the way that program asks.

Questions people ask
What about an unused needle still in the wrapper?
Ask the sharps program. Unused medical supplies may have a pharmacy return. Do not toss wrapped needles into household recycling.
Can I tape the lid of a detergent bottle instead?
Use an approved sharps container. A taped household bottle is not the collection program's standard, and it is easy to mistake for recycling.
