Disposing of a Baby Crib

A crib is bulky furniture, and an older drop-side crib should not be passed on. Disassemble it, bag the hardware, and ask the site where finished baby furniture goes.

Do not donate a crib that fails current use

A crib with a drop side, missing slats, a broken latch, or cut-down rails is not a gift for another baby. Those designs have been tied to injuries, and a thrift store should not have to discover the defect after you leave. If the crib is a recent fixed-side model, complete, dry, and unmodified, a donation may be possible only after the charity agrees. Call. Otherwise plan on disposal. Ask the disposal site whether cribs are bulky furniture or construction-style wood. A crib is finished wood, hardware, and sometimes a mattress. The mattress is a separate item with its own rule, so ask about it rather than assuming the foundation article covers a crib mattress. Do not set the crib on the curb unless a bulky program told you to put furniture out.

Take it apart in the room

Pull the mattress out, bag loose screws, and break the crib down into ends, rails, and the stabilizer bar. A whole crib rarely turns a hallway. Keep the hardware in one bag tied to a rail so you do not spill bolts in the truck and so a scavenger is not handed a ready-to-rebuild drop-side kit. If you are disposing of the crib because it is unsafe, leave it disassembled. Do not include instructions that would help someone rebuild a banned style. Sanding paint off an old crib is not a disposal step. If the paint might be old lead paint, stop sanding and scraping, bag only chips that have already flaked, and hire licensed people for lead-paint removal. The wood you already took apart can still be hauled as bulky waste.

Stack the rails flat

Rails are long and thin. Stack them flat, strap the bundle, and keep metal brackets from scratching the cab glass. The ends are heavier. Put them low. At the site, unload in the bulky-furniture bay. Tell the attendant if the crib is a drop-side you disassembled so it would not be reused. Do not lean intact sides against a donation container. If the site wants metal springs or a metal frame in the scrap area, make that second stop inside the facility. Sweep bolts out of the bed. A single crib bolt is enough to puncture a knee when you climb back in.

Before you go

  1. Do not donate a drop-side, broken, or modified crib.
  2. Disassemble the crib and bag the hardware with the rails.
  3. Skip any sanding or scraping if the paint might contain lead.
  4. Strap the bundle and unload it as bulky furniture where you are assigned.

Donating a drop-side crib because the wood still looks sturdy.

Questions people ask

Does the crib mattress go with the frame?

Ask separately. A crib mattress is bedding, and many sites treat mattresses and furniture foundations on their own rule. Do not hide it inside the rails.

Can I burn the wood rails?

No. Finished crib wood is painted or stained and belongs in the bulky stream the site names, not in a fire pit.
