Correcting a Scale Ticket Before You Leave

Look at the class, the weights, and the extra lines while you are still at the window. A same-day correction is a conversation. A next-week complaint is a memory.

Read the ticket before you pull away

Find the material or rate class, the weights or the count, and any extra lines. Compare those words with what you told the attendant and with what you actually unloaded. If you brought household trash and the class says a different material, ask. If a count does not match the items you handed over, ask. You are not being difficult. The line behind you is not a reason to accept a record you believe is wrong. Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city when you plan the trip, and remember listings can be out of date. The ticket, not the listing, is the record of the visit you just made.

Ask for the sheet, then for the fix

Point at the line you question and ask which posted fee-sheet row produced it. If the attendant agrees it is wrong, ask them to correct the ticket before you leave and to hand you the corrected copy. If they say the ticket matches the sheet, ask them to explain the definition until you understand it. You may have misnamed the load. If you still disagree, ask how a dispute is recorded and follow that process. Do not refuse to move in a way that traps other drivers. Park where they tell you and finish the conversation safely.

Leave with one story on paper

The copy in your hand should match the correction they described. If they reprint, destroy nothing until you are sure the new ticket is complete, then keep the version they tell you is official. Note the time and the name if a name is offered. If you discover the problem after you have driven home, call the same day while the visit is easy to find. Do not alter the paper yourself. A marked-up ticket is not a correction. The site's revised ticket is the correction.

Before you go

  1. Read the class, weights or counts, and extra lines at the window.
  2. Ask which fee-sheet row produced any line you do not understand.
  3. If it is wrong, ask for a corrected ticket before you leave.
  4. If you notice later, call the same day and do not alter the paper yourself.

Driving off to free the line, then disputing a class you never looked at.

Questions people ask

What if they will not change it?

Ask how to record a dispute and follow that process. Park where instructed. Keep the ticket. A calm paper trail beats an argument in the scale lane.

Can I get a copy later if the correction is right but I lost it?

Call with the date, time, and vehicle details and ask. Sooner is better. Do not recreate the ticket yourself.
