Bags pretend to contain glass
A trash bag full of shards looks contained until it touches a paver, a bed bolt, or the corner of a toolbox. Then it is a leak of glass into the rest of the load and into your hand at the bay. Use a rigid box, a bucket with a lid, or a crate. Fold the flaps and tape them. Write that the container holds glass, on the top and on the side, so a helper does not grab it by a soft spot. Do not overfill. A box you cannot close is a scoop. This is window and door glass from a household haul, boxed so it survives the ride. It is not a bag of medical sharps, and it should not be mixed with those. If paint flakes in the glass might be lead paint, stop and follow the lead-paint rule: do not sand or scrape, and keep that debris for a licensed path.
Where the box sits in the bed
Put the box against the cab, on the floor, where a heavier item cannot be set on it later. Do not bury it under logs to keep it from sliding. The logs will crush it and then you have glass and logs. Strap or wedge the box so it cannot slide into the tailgate and burst. A milk crate of shards with a lid strapped on is easier to lift than a taped carton that has gone soft. Wear gloves when you load it and when you unload it. Keep a small empty box for the one piece you find in the bed afterward. You will find one. Do not brush the bed with a bare hand as a final check.
Say it out loud at the bay
When you arrive, tell the attendant you have a box of broken glass and ask which bay takes it. Do not throw the box from the tailgate to prove it is sturdy. Set it down. If the box failed on the way, do not shove the debris out with the rest of the load. Rebox what you can, warn anyone helping, and pick up the lane before you leave. A sparkle on the concrete is a flat tire for the next visitor. If the site wanted glass separate from wood frames, you should have boxed the glass at home. The bay is a bad place to sort shards with your boots.
Before you go
- Put shards in a rigid box or lidded crate that closes, and label it as glass.
- Set the box on the bed floor against the cab, not under heavier debris.
- Strap or wedge it so it cannot slide into the tailgate.
- Tell the attendant, set the box down in the assigned bay, and sweep leftover chips.

Questions people ask
Is a cardboard box enough?
A sturdy carton that still closes, taped and not crushed, can work for one trip. A soggy carton is not a container. Use a crate if the cardboard has any give.
Can bottle glass and window glass share a box?
They should not. Bottle banks and window disposal are different streams. Box only the window glass for the disposal bay you were given.
