Read the height before you leave the lot
The number that matters is the height of the truck you are driving, including anything strapped to the roof. Rental contracts and the cab sticker are the place to look, not a memory of a different size. Write it down. Then call the site and ask whether that height can pass the scale house, the canopy, and the entrance you were told to use. A transfer station and a small convenience center do not share one clearance. Dumpmapper can show candidate sites. The pin does not show the beam over the lane. If the person on the phone is unsure, ask them to look or to send you to a lane they know is clear.
Stop when the roof is a guess
If you arrive and the clearance is unmarked or lower than your note, stop. Do not creep forward to test it. A box that kisses a scale-house roof is damage, and it blocks the lane behind you. Ask staff whether another lane, another building, or another site can take that height. Turn around only when you have room and someone is guiding from the side, not from behind the truck. Overhead branches at the driveway are the same rule. Look up at the rental lot before you accept the truck, because a low wire there is a problem you can refuse while the truck is still theirs on the lot.
Height is not the only gate
A truck that clears the roof can still be refused for length, lettering, or residency. Ask those questions on the same call so you do not solve clearance and miss the vehicle rule. When you are waved through, unload only in the bay you are shown. Do not assume the tall door is the resident floor. Sweep the box at the site before you leave. On the way out, look up again for a strap or a tarp left on the roof. A loose strap becomes litter on the highway and can also hang into the next canopy you did not plan to meet on the drive back to the lot.
Before you go
- Write down the truck height, including anything on the roof.
- Ask the site whether that height clears the scale house and the entrance.
- Stop and ask if the posted clearance is missing or too low.
- Check the roof for straps before you pull out.

Questions people ask
The sticker and the contract disagree. Which height do I use?
Stop and ask the rental staff before you leave. Do not average the two numbers. Use the height they confirm for that truck, then call the disposal site with that figure. If you cannot get a clear number, do not take a truck you cannot describe.
What if only one lane is tall enough?
Use the lane staff point to, even if it is not the one you expected. Do not improvise a path around the canopy. If that lane is closed, ask where else the truck can go. Leaving with the load is better than forcing a short door.
Search Dumpmapper by ZIP code or city, then call the site before you load the truck. Hours and accepted materials change.
